complex
Carbohydrates, even so-called complex carbs, are all ultimately registered as sugar by our body. If you’re struggling to lose weight too many carbs might be to blame, including healthy ones.
In a bit more detail – our body converts sugar, carbs and starches into glucose and our blood sugar rises. The pancreas pumps insulin to manage blood sugar and push glucose into our cells for fuel. Insulin is our fat storing hormone (lucky us!) and excess glucose is stored as fat. Over time, more insulin is needed to counterbalance ongoing carb intake and our body gets programmed for resistant fat storage. Meaning you stop burning fat altogether!
Eventually appetite hormones are dulled so we feel hungrier, metabolism slows, we feel sluggish, and worse, we expose ourselves to a whole host of diseases like metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, fatty liver, PCOS.
If you’re not dropping the weight, follow a low carb regimen or better yet eliminate carbs altogether. Get your fiber from low carb non-starchy veggies and leafy greens. You’ve been warned. Those innocent looking starchy vegetables and healthy complex carbs? Spooky!
