soy

Asbestos was considered the holy grail of construction used for its fire retardant ability amongst many other rather dull but incredibly useful things. Its popularity knew no bounds and then in 1906 someone died from asbestos poisoning and the rest as they say is history. Enter soy. Soy has long been considered the holy grail of plant-based alternatives - soya milk, yogurt and cheese, tofu, vegetarian meat alternatives, dairy and meat free frozen meals and desserts.

It’s also widely used as a filler and protein in things like cereals, infant formula, bread crumbs, crackers, energy bars, soups, various condiments, nutrition supplements. Perhaps due to its widespread use, soy has gotten a ton of attention over the years with research yielding results both in favor and against. With any food that receives both good and bad press, I think it’s wise to look into it further and make up your own mind. If you do consume it, opt for fermented soy, tempeh, miso and the lesser known natto.
